Artist: Jan Stephan

The Summer 2024 Gallery Walk features watercolor work by Jan Stephan, an Iowa City watercolor artist creating semi-abstract, unconventional, honest depictions of local landscapes and occasionally still life. She creates work inspired by the Iowa county she grew up with. The work develops from photos, real life, and her imagination. Jan enjoys creating work with minimal detail and trusting the viewer’s imagination as well as her own. Watercolor is said to be the most difficult medium to work with, but it is also the most magical and exciting. It does its own thing and then the artist works with her own skill and imagination to make works of art. Happy “accidents” are part of the adventure. Watercolor allows the artist the freedom to work more intuitively to put on paper the peace, beauty, and contentment of Iowa landscapes. When moving freely, the paint will allow the artist to create new, dynamic works of art. Jan is a member of the Iowa Watercolor Society.
